How embarrassing is this video…..
This video was taped over 3 years ago – January 9th 2015!!! Before I ever became a trainer or went to yoga school. But I still love and practice yoga weekly. The video you see here is of the Half Moon Pose (Sanskrit: Ardha Chandrasana) that I used to practice when I practiced a certain kind of heated yoga that I no longer practice for multiple reasons. I never really practice this pose any more. The ones I practice now are much more gentle on the body, and sustainable for life. Below are just a few points as to why I do yoga. If you’re looking to incorporate yoga, I highly suggest doing so. I strength train 3-4 times / week and try to get an hour of yoga in on the days I’m not strength training. This helps keep the body and brain active and peaceful.
1. Gives me “Me” Time
Every time I’m about 5 minutes into a practice, I think to myself, “Wow, I’m so blessed to have this moment right now. The whole world is racing at lightening speed and I’m over here in my own world, in my own space, in my own vibe slowing my movement and breath harmoniously.” It’s the 5 minutes, 20 minutes, one hour all to myself. No one is bothering me. I’m trying not to think about anything but my breath and body. About the moment. About the positives in life. Everyone could benefit from some ME time.
2. Mind Control & Release of Suffering
The main goal of yoga is to restrain the mind. I’m currently reading The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Below are some quotes that hit home for me.
“If the restraint of the mental modification is achieved, one has reached the goal of Yoga.”
“If you can control the rising of the mind into ripples, you will experience Yoga.”
“If you can have control over the thought forms and change them as you want, you are not bound by the outside world. There’s nothing wrong with the world. You can make it heaven or hell according to your approach…. If you control your mind, you have controlled everything. Then there is nothing in this world to bind you.”
Aversion & Desire
In yoga it is said that aversion and desire are two common sources of suffering. By practicing poses, you learn and become comfortable with the fact that some deeper parts of some poses may not be available to you at a certain time and day. You also learn to not be oppose to trying new things. This simple philosophy carries so far over into other realms of life it’s incredible. I used to think I needed to buy a home before I was 35 or else I’d just be behind in life. Nope. Not anymore. I’ve let go of that desire and man, am I a whole lot happier. I used to have a lot of aversions in terms of what I liked to do with friends. Nope. Not anymore. I’ll do anything and everything with anyone if I have time and it is safe for me. At least once =)
3. Aligns & Save my Spine
Boy oh boy does my lower back feel amazingly strong and healthy after practicing yoga. Our lumbar spine is under so much stress daily from sitting, standing, laying in bed, it’s almost constantly compressed one way or another. Through poses like Apanasana (knees to chest pose), and Utanasana (Forward Fold) I can literally feel each of my vertebrae retracting from one another. This is especially orgasmic after deadlifts.
Find me on social media if you’re interested in more about yoga. I’d be happy to share some videos and sequences with you all. All my links are below. I graduate as a certified yoga instructor July 15th this year. I hope this post inspires you practice yoga so you too can reap these benefits.
Stay healthy and happy!
